What’s a video wall and how does it work?

A video wall is a series of synchronized displays that combine to form one large screen. That combined large screen can be used as a single canvas or it can be subdivided as needed to show a variety of content sources simultaneously.

Basic walls can be deployed using just the internal scalers built into commercial displays. However, anything beyond a basic deployment requires a dedicated processor or controller.

A video wall processor is a computer or a specialized server that takes multiple inputs, processes them and outputs synchronized content onto displays. A video wall controller is either 1) an add on to the processor which gives customers more advanced control, interactivity and lay out features, or 2) it is a solution that is both controller and processor all in one--a single solution with the functionality of both.

Why Video Walls are in such demand today

There are a few factors driving the skyrocketing rise in deployments around the world. For digital signage applications, with large format displays everywhere today, it’s getting harder to engage and attract an audience. A single display is no longer enough. Instead to compete for attention, instead organizations from around the world (even the folks at NASA) are turning to video walls with engaging content.

The increasing need for data visualization and collaboration tools is also driving the uptake in video walls. Control rooms, command centers, meeting rooms, executive suites and law enforcement are all using display walls to share data and information and to ensure informed decision making. When gathering people to collaborate and make decisions there’s no better tool than a multi-screen display.

Industry Standard Hardware

Userful uses a standard PC and a network of zero client devices connected over a standard gigabit Ethernet network. Single install setup turns a standard Intel Core i7 PC into a high end browser-managed controller—but without the cost. Optionally add extra Nvidia video cards which are used by Userful's video wall software to offload video rendering thereby increasing the power of the PC and the number of screens and size of content supported.

Artistic & Grid Configurations

Arrange screens in standard grid or artistic formats. Rotate individual displays to any angle to create unique layouts. Add virtually unlimited content inputs from just about any source: Local CMS player, Live TV, RTSP, RDP, VNC, an interactive desktop or full screen browser or just about any content using one or more HDMI or SDI capture cards.

Configuration Flexibility

Zones, Multi window and picture-in-picture give customers flexibility in how and where multiple sources are displayed. Userful enables customers to quickly and easily change layout and configuration on the fly.

In addition, with a single touch customers can instantly change the content playing on the displays using a smartphone or tablet

Powerful Features for Control Rooms & Command Centers

Our product has a powerful suite of control tools. Administrators can preset lay out and content options for all displays, and then staff are able to invoke those presets using a tablet or smartphone switching content and configuration (including zones, multi-window and picture-in-picture) across all displays with a single touch.

In addition, operators can have mouse and keyboard control over an entire wall or a zone within the wall using any browser, even a smartphone or tablet.

Our product ability to natively display desktop and full screen browser sessions makes it an ideal solution for Network Operations Centers (NOC) and other control rooms that require display of browser and desktop applications. our Video wall can also capture and display a desktop through the network or using HDMI.

Video walls are most often used for....

Digital signage

For digital signage use cases, they are an important tool to engage with audiences and capture attention. Digital signage is everywhere today and people are so accustomed to seeing screens in public spaces that a single screen is no longer enough to attract attention. As a result it's increasingly popular to deploy a unique artistic layout with angled displays or an unusual aspect ratio.

Data visualization

Control rooms, command centers and executive suites are all using multi-screen arrays to display and interact with simultaneous data sources. Video walls are the best way to visualize data and information and work on it together to make collaborative decisions.

Team collaboration

In meeting rooms, conference rooms, huddle rooms in offices around the world, multi-screen displays enable teams to collaborate, share multiple data sources and effectively collaborate.
